Well, the film isn’t really a thriller as the promos suggested
Vikramjit Singh’s latest directorial venture, Roy starring Arjun Rampal, Jacqueline Fernandez, Ranbir Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Asif Basra has finally hit the theatres. I just caught the first show of the movie and I’m left with mixed feelings about the film.
What’s it about?
Roy is a story of love and self-realisation. Kabir Grewal (Arjun Rampal) is a filmmaker. Popular, handsome and a womanizer are a few terms that describe him. His ongoing project, Roy, is the third installment of his popular robbery series where Ranbir plays the title role. While shooting for the same, he happens to meet Ayesha Aamir (Jacqueline Fernandez) in Malaysia and his script starts taking an inspiration from his real-life experiences with Ayesha whom he’s fallen in love with. But things take a turn when Ayesha decides to leave him. Now the fate of film and his life depends on how he deals with the heart-break.
What’s hot?
The best part of the film is its story-telling style. The life of the filmmaker and that of his subject Roy in his film are shown simultaneously as separate tracks. Arjun and Ranbir aren’t shown having any interaction throughout the film, except towards the end, which adds to the charm. The plot itself strictly stays focused on Kabir without many detours. And Rampal literally seems to be living the character. You can actually empathise with him. His transition from a casual flirt to an intense brooding guy is smooth and effortless. Ranbir Kapoor too manages to make an impression despite limited screen presence. The music of the film is good though not relevant in the plot of the film. Another plus of the film is the beautiful locales that keep you engaged when there isn’t much going on in the story.
What’s not?
Firstly, the film is not what it claimed to be. When I entered the theatre I was prepared for a suspense sequence to unfold, but as it happens, Roy is a little bit of philosophical and a lot of emotional drama. The film drags certain scenes unnecessarily like the time when Arjun is shown writing the script. So the scene starts with Arjun placing a drink on the table, then his cigarettes, then his typewriter and finally places himself on the chair. But no, that’s not where it ends. Because he has to shout at his dog, then look at the watch and then smoke some more. I mean, we get it that scripting a film is a task but it does not require so much detailing. Also the film seems like a waste of talented actors like Anupam Kher, Asif Basra and Rajit Kapur are highly underused. And Jacqueline too doesn’t have much to do apart from look gorgeous, which she does with perfectly.
Verdict:
If you have an appetite for a slow-paced love story with philosophy, you’re probably going to like it but if, like me, you go in for some action to unfold, you’ll be extremely disappointed.
